Is your generator missing from the list?

Feel free to check out the Honda website in case you didn’t find your generator on this list.

Symptoms of a Bad Spark Plug

Are you thinking about replacing your current spark plug? There are some universal signs you need to look for:

  • Your generator won’t start at all
  • The generator needs repeated attempts to start properly
  • The generator misfires
  • Fuel consumption is noticeably increased
  • There are deposits and a buildup of residue on your spark plug
  • The spark plug is damaged

Are there any deposits? You need to remove the spark plug with a proper tool, clean it using a small knife and make sure that it is gapped properly. You can find the ideal gap size on the list above.

Changing Spark Plug on Your Generator

Here is a quick overview of our 7-step guide to replacing the spark plug in your generator:

  1. Make sure the power switch on your generator is off and all power cords are unplugged from it. Also, ensure the surface of the machine is not too hot, and wear protective gloves and glasses.
  2. Locate the spark plug by following the black cable connected to the engine and ending with a boot.
  3. Remove the wire that is connected to the old spark plug by grabbing onto the boot firmly, twisting it, and pulling it off at the same time.
  4. Clean the area around the old plug to avoid any debris, dirt, or oil residue from falling into the engine.
  5. Remove the old plug using the correct spark plug socket and a ratchet. Use the ratchet only to make the spark plug loose and then remove it by turning the socket manually.
  6. Check the new spark plug for the correct model, size, and gap using a gap measuring tool.
  7. Install the new spark plug by inserting it into the empty spark plug socket and placing it into the empty socket on your engine. Tighten the spark plug with a ratchet, being careful not to overdo it, and remove both the ratchet and the spark plug socket.

  1. I am running a honda gx390 on Natural Gas and sometimes find it hard to start. What Spark plug and gap should I be using? Should gap for NG be different than for gas?
